LG Electronics and BRISA consolidate and expand their partnership in projects related to the mobility field LG Electronics and BRISA have just signed a contract to renew and expand their Cellphone Software Quality and Control Testing Laboratory project. The project started in February of this year and contemplated the implantation, by BRISA, of an exclusive laboratory to test the quality of the softwares developed or adapted in Brazil for LG Electronics new cellphone models directed to the Brazilian market and some other Latin american countries. The development of the activities related to the Cellphone Software Quality and Control Testing is part of the LG Electronics strategy, in Brazil, to develop local partnerships, thus sharing the most advanced technological know-how with its partners (such as BRISA) in the markets where it is present. According to Ciro Hernandes, LG Electronics General Manager of R&D, the project has reached good results. ‘A series of factors, besides the competence required to perform the tests with our cellphone models, has led us to choose BRISA’, states Ciro. ‘LG Electronics R&D team has followed all of the activities which have been developed and trained BRISA’s professionals, as well as sharing technology and knowledge with them’, adds the manager. The renewal of such highly strategic project consolidates even more BRISA and LG Electronics’ partnership, which started in 2002. Nowadays, BRISA is LG Electronics’ main partner in the development of R&D projects incentivated by the Informatics Law. BRISA’s Quality Testing Laboratory, located in São Paulo, relies on a highly specialized technical team, composed by 24 professionals (among technicians and engineers), number which will be expanded to 34 professionals in the next few days, due to the growth of the request of its services. At BRISA’s laboratories, basically three sets of tests are performed, related to the softwares of several models of handset devices produced by LG Electronics: • The first set of tests has as its main goal checking if all of the functions were correctly inserted in softwares of the cellphone devices and if the user is able to perform such functions accordingly, such functions are: search phone numbers or contacts stored in the phonebook, take pictures, record videos, send and store them, make and receive calls in a proper manner, send and receive SMS and MMS, Bluetooth use, file management in the handset memory (and external memory), multimedia functions, data synchronization to the desktop, among others. • The second set of tests comprehends the evaluation of such basic function which require the use of the carriers’ communication networks. Such tests relate to the way each device communicates to its carrier (of mobile services). Such tests can be summed up as: telephone connections performance, sending and receiving calls, besides other functions which guarantee the proper functioning of the cellphone devices during a call, according to the requirements of the telephone carriers (in Brazil and other Latin american countries) to which such devices are commercialized. • The third set of tests focuses on making sure that the user’s manuals contains proper information related to all of the functions available in the handset device as well as detailed steps to perfom each of them, thus guaranteeing the user a trustful document which can be useful for solving possible doubts on how to use their devices. Specific tests are designed to each of the devices produced by LG Electronics, that tipically comprehends the performance of over 2000 (two thousand) functional tests for each handset model, which are always implemented in a personalized way, based on the technical and functional specifications established by the several carriers. The tests which are currently developed at BRISA’s laboratories are performed with cellphone devices which make use of GSM technology as well as cellphone devices which make use of CDMA technology. Up to now, the activities related to cellphone testing have already been offered to more than 34 cellphone carriers in 13 Latin american countries, including the main Brazilian carriers. During the implantation phase of such project, BRISA made use of its recognized knowledge of methodology and processes for technological systems development, resulting in the improvement of work processes, in the development and implantation of new tools for performance control and testing and in creating a knowledge center where all the history and occurency information of each of the performed tests is stored. According to Luiz Lisboa, BRISA’s Business Vice-President, BRISA’s biggest challenge is to guarantee (and overcome) the productivity and efficiency of the quality testing activities previously performed at LG Electronics laboratories located abroad’. ‘The contract renewal and the continuity of such an important project proves that the expected results by LG Electronics were fully accomplished by national engineering teams’, complemented BRISA’s Vice-president. By taking part in such project , BRISA once more contributes to the (basic) software development of advanced technology (as cellphones) in Brazil (by Brazilian engineers as well).
